VIEW FROM THE PULPIT                     January 2016

Difference        Jeremy Corbyn’s leftwing leadership of the Labour Party is being tested because of policy differences between himself and some of his rightwing front bench            members. This brought about a reshuffle to his front bench and a few sackings and some resignations. It hardly equalled what Harold Macmillan did in 1962 when he sacked seven of his front bench, attracting the comment of ‘The night of the long knives’. That expression was derived from Hitler’s purge of his dissenters in 1934 and led Germany into WW2.

Demonstrations erupted in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Bahrain and Pakistan over the beheading of a Muslim cleric, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr in Saudi Arabia, signifying again the difference between Sunni rule of that country and the Shiite rule of Iran. Both Sunni and Shiite factions agree that Ishmael is the son of Abraham who they follow. Whereas Jews and Christians adhere to the Bible record that Isaac was the true seed of God’s promise to Abraham. That through him Jacob (Israel), then the twelve tribes of Israel produced the nation of Israel.  One of those tribes was Judah through whom Christ came, the ‘Lion of the Tribe of Judah’, the one who will bring together a divied world into one kingdom of righteousness and glory.

It is the Bible that gives us the difference of male and female. Ge 1:27 reads, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Ge 5:2 concurs,  “Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.” They came together and became one, their name was Adam. Male and female are fundamentally different, biologically, emotionally, responsively. A man thinks one thing at a time whereas a woman is multifunctional. She at the same time can talk  on the telephone, make a cup of coffee and click a mouse over her laptop to perform I.T. requirements.

Todays society differs greatly by men wanting to take the woman’s roll and butch women wanting to take the man’s roll, let us face it, man and woman are as different biologically, etc. as chalk and cheese.

Twins are born from the same womb at the same time, one following the other, and yet there are differences between the babies even if they appear to be physically identical. Of course there are non-identical twins, and different sex twins, every person born is different to any other, we are unique, with our own finger prints, DNA, personallity and more. God made us similar but diverse, one from another. This diversity is seen throughout all God’s creation whether on earth or in the universe. Some nations spend billions tying to discover another planet like earth, where there might be a sign of water. This they say could produce life and so disprove the Bible which says in the first verse, “In the begginig God created the heaven and the earth.” If politicians and scientists believed that they could spend their billions to provide clean water and food for all the residents of planet earth.

The Bible tells us that Isaac and Rebekah had twin boys and they really were as different as chalk and cheese. Genesis 25:24 says about Rebekah, “And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau. And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them. And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.” Jewish law affords a double portion to the firstborn, which was in this case, Esau, but God had said to Rebekah when she was carrying the boys in her womb,  “Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.”

Jacob was a devious character before he wrestled with God at the brook Jabok where his life was changed, his name was changed from Jacob which means ‘Cheater’ to Israel which means ‘Prince with God’. What a diference that made both then and now. Esau was rebellious and reprobate, Hebrews 12:16 says, “Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright”. Jacob turned from his sin to serve God, Esau never did and that was the ultimate difference between the twins.

Peter and John were both disciples of Christ but they were different in their service for Christ. Before Jesus called them to follow Him, they were both fishermen, they were partners in their fishing business on the Sea of Galillee. When Peter was called to follow Christ he was casting his net, that occupation changed from catching fish to catching men by preaching the gospel. When John was called he was mending his nets, which he also left to mend lives in a pastoral ministry to the family of God, his epistles show this clearly. Both men played a major part among the twelve Apostles, being wonderful examples of preaching to unbelievers and caring for believers. There is an eternity of difference for those who believe the gospel and receive Christ as their Saviour, and those who reject the Son of God. Believers will spend eternity with Christ, unbelievers will spend eternity in Hell. That is the greatest difference of all, Heaven or Hell. What will it be for you?  Do what Peter and John did, obey the call of the gospel and follow the Lord Jesus Christ.  God bless you all.
